Short Reads to Stimulate Long Thoughts

Titus 2

Titus 2:1-15

  1. But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.

Remember you will give an account to Jesus concerning what you talk about and how you talk about it.  Be sure what you share is in harmony with your relationship with Jesus.  Your speech has eternal consequences just as your actions do.

  1. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.

Mature men need to be examples of the character of Christ.  They are to live in a manner that illustrates submission to Jesus.  Yes, their speech, attitudes, and actions are to reveal Christ’s presence and power in their lives.

  1. Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,

The older women in His Church are also to live revealing the power of Christ’s presence in them.  They are not to conform to the values of the culture they are living in.

  1. so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
  2. to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Encourage these women to pass on to the younger women the values of Christ, to be sensible in their thoughts, pure in their living, homemakers, holding to the truth with kindness and have a Christ-centered relationship with their husbands.

  1. Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
  2. in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified,

8,  sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.

So, it is with older men.  They are to figure a way to pass on Christ’s values to the younger men.  Encourage them to live in harmony with Jesus rather than being copycats of their culture.  Help them experience intimacy with Jesus by example and teaching.

  1. Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,

Remind those who are working for others to do so as though they are going to give an account to Jesus for their attitude of service.  For they will give an account.

  1. not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.

Never justify a bad attitude, poor performance or theft, as acceptable.  Remember, your service is given to bring Jesus to the attention of those you are serving.

  1. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
  2. instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,

Salvation is more than something you are given it is a transformation from the old life to a new life.  It is because of this new life we stand out in stark contrast to the culture we live in.  Living in harmony with Jesus puts us at odds with cultural standards.  We will suffer for it.

  1. looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,

Our confidence lies in the persons of Jesus, Father, and Spirit.  Because of their faithfulness, boldly identify with Them.

  1. who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Jesus refers to us as HIS OWN PEOPLE.  He Himself is our Hope.  Our faith is not our hope.  The works or deeds Jesus leads us to are not our HOPE.  Our Hope is Jesus Himself.  The cost, to Him, of our redemption, proves His commitment to His Father and to us.

  1. These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Remember you have the authority of God to share, exhort and at times reprove.  Boldly stand in and with Jesus, giving others the freedom to do the same.  Do not let others silence you, always follow God’s lead.  Learn the difference between the Spirit’s voice and the voices opposed to the Spirit.
